i know i'm
better off alone
but would it physically kill you to pick up your phone?
i
know i made the sane choice
but i might die if i don't hear your
voice
because my future just became this empty page
where there used to be
the brightest colored polaroids
and little scrawly notes that no one else
could read
now every trace of you is in with the old memorabilia
so i can
take you out years down the line
maybe with another love
and say "i loved
this girl once, isn't it funny?"
the way i used to think forever meant
forever
the way it took me so long to figure out
there are promises you
are allowed to break
that there's only so much that people should
take
when they're dishing back their own brand of venom
but won't just let
the damn thing die
we must have loved making each other cry
more than
making love
because all i remember is feeling helpless
and slamming down
phones
so you could call me back
and launch another attack-
look what
you made me do!
color it all red and broken
like a crayon
you said
you'd die without me
but you're doing just fine
such a cliche of a
line
as i rip off a song
as we ripped off our clothes
like skin
to
expose the ugly vulnerability
of what's underneath
like i kissed you in
the rain
after you told me you kissed him
and i still couldn't turn you
away
years later my bile still strong
just rerouted
instinctively open
my arms and cling
saying "let's go for coffee"
feeling immune and
stalwart
with the taste of my new girlfriend's kiss
fresh on my lips
i
want to tempt fate with friendship
i want to swim out too far and dare the
waves to claim me
i want to walk out to the edge
and
just
stand
there
to know the view
to know for sure i can
resist the sturm and drang
of me and
you
